Model NATO and Security in the North
September 15-19, 2025 (Tromsø, Norway)
UiT's Centre for Peace Studies is pleased to host the 2025 edition of Model NATO and Security in the North, an intensive course (5 ECTS*) that fuses academic lectures and panel discussions with a dynamic simulation of NATO's decision-making in a crisis scenario.
The unique opportunity is open to UiT students and a limited number of funded participants (5 each) from:
Umeå University (Sweden)
University of Iceland (Iceland)
University of Southern Denmark (Denmark)
University of Lapland (Finland)
Funding for selected partner university students will cover air travel (return ticket) & housing in Tromsø.

Course Overview
The week-long program entails three days of thematic lectures and interactive panel discussions followed by an immersive two-day NATO crisis simulation. Students will directly engage with issues shaping transatlantic security, particularly in the Nordic region and the Arctic.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will gain:
A critical understanding of NATO’s structure, functions, and evolving strategic priorities
Insights into current politico-security dynamics affecting the Alliance
Practical skills in diplomacy, dialogue, and crisis management

Students enrolled in undergraduate*, Master’s, or PhD programs at the partner universities listed above are eligible to apply.

Credits and Certification
* Master’s and PhD students will earn 5 ECTS (MA level) and receive a certificate of participation.
* Undergraduate students will receive a certificate of participation only (no ECTS credits).
